To Organize Delirium: A Tour of the Art Institute of Chicago's Hélio Oiticica Exhibit
Tour led by Associate Curator Anna Katherine Brodbeck, PhD
Talk by Jungian Analyst Ken James, PhD
Saturday, April 1, 2017 | 11:00am - 2:00pm
In a unique coming together of Institutes, join with the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jung Institute of Chicago in exploring the work of Hélio Oiticica, the Brazilian conceptual artist. Oiticica is best known for the enigmatic boxes, capes, and environments he created in the 1960s. Tour this important exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago with the associate curator Anna Katherine Brodbeck. Join a discussion after the tour; Dr. Brodbeck and Jungian Analyst Ken James will explore ways this experiential art might support consciousness in each of us. As we respectfully enter the space of art, what does this art experience have to teach us about ourselves and becoming?
Oiticica organizes his works not as devices, but as 'energy-centers.' Many of his works put the physical presence of the spectator at the center; none consider the ‘art’ as a separate, detached object. Oiticica put strong emphasis on personal experience in art – he looked for ways the spectator could participate bodily in the art and uncover the metaphor, moving from retinal perception to physical perception. In doing so, he questioned the “status of the object, the nature of representation [or image], and the passive behavior of the audience.” (Brett, G., art critic). He challenged concepts of inside and outside, enclosing and excluding spaces. He uncovered ways of conceptualizing and experiencing art not as finished, but as a searching process.
Can we use Oiticica’s creative genius to transcend opposites like chaos and order or stasis and delirium? Can we experience a participative process that somehow ties to our own individuation? Join us on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the Art Institute of Chicago to find out.
