Continuing to focus on our Founders’ Day theme, this week-long summer intensive series offers the opportunity to seek a creative transformation of cultural, political, and environmental chaos that deeply impacts daily lives. An experiential approach allows connections between cosmic cycles and the prevailing archetypal patterns arising on an unconscious and cultural scale to surface. How do these underground rivers in our cultural life condition individual lives while also suggesting new therapeutic pathways of psychological healing?
Modalities will include journaling, image-making, active imagination, sandtray, and movement.

Participants will be invited to use journal writing and image making to engage current cultural, political, and environmental chaos as it impacts their daily lives as well as interacts with split off aspects of their own psychic past. Through this process, we will engage the initiatory energies at the crossroads of destruction and creation to allow new pathways for individual healing and cultural renewal to emerge.
Learning ObjectivesParticipants will learn to:
1) Identify and interact with inner and outer traumatic experiences in your life.
2) Practice the process of active imagination in relation to these experiences.
Mary Dougherty, MFA, ATR, NCPsyA is
a Jungian psychoanalyst and art psychotherapist in private practice in
Chicago. She is the former Chair of the Program Committee, former President of
the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago, and former Director of Training.
She lectures on the clinical uses of film as active imagination, and the
impact of Jung’s thought on creative development and artistic
production. As a printmaker
and performance artist, she exhibited nationally and internationally, and
in 2001 she was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement in the Arts” award by
the Chicago Women’s Caucus for the Arts.
Sandplay is a psychotherapeutic nonverbal three-dimensional process of therapy with children and adults. The class will focus on introducing Sandplay. We will go over the theory of Sandplay, how to get started, an experiential experience, and basic Jungian insight into symbols.
Learning ObjectivesParticipants will be able to:
1) Describe the history and theory of Jungian Sandplay.
2) Apply insight into the power of symbols and language of the unconscious in Jungian Sandplay.
3) Witness the healing process of the sand in a case demonstration in Jungian Sandplay.
Heather Cody, LCPC is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who enjoys working with
individuals of all age ranges and families. Heather specializes in
trauma counseling, weight management especially surrounding Bariatric
surgeries (pre- and post-op), depression, and anxiety. Heather earned
her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Illinois State University and
her Master of Arts in Counseling from Saint Xavier University, where she
majored in both Community Counseling and School Counseling. Upon
graduation, Heather began working in the school setting and a year later
started working in the community setting as well. Heather's
credentials also include extensive training in Sandplay Therapy, and
completing the two-year Clinical Training Program (now Jungian Psychotherapy Program) at the Jung Institute of Chicago. Heather has been an adjunct professor at Governors State
University and has presented at Olivet Nazarene University as well as
Americorp. Heather has also presented at two Illinois School Counseling
Association conferences and has been published with an article in their
This workshop will focus on using Creative Nonfiction as a therapeutic
tool in addressing forms of personal and cultural chaos. Examining the
Genesis myth of the Fall by focusing on (1) Thomas Cole’s 1828 painting
“The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden,” (2) scenes from Art
Spiegelman’s In the Shadow of No Towers, and (3) the title “tango scene“
in the 1992 film The Scent of a Woman, the workshop will:
a. analyze the nature of chaos and creativity as presented in Cole’s painting, Spiegelman’s art, and the film’s scene,b. analyze the parallels between the client-therapist situation and that of the writer/artist-reader/viewer,c. analyze tools of writing in the “creative non-fiction” genre, andd. use these tools in an afternoon’s creative non-fiction writing workshop so thate. members of the workshop leave with the beginning of a personal, creative non-fiction story.
1) Analyze the nature of creative non-fiction as a therapeutic tool.
2) Practice using the tools of creative non-fiction.
Gene Laskowski, PhD retired
from 25 years of teaching in the English Department at the University
of Michigan. He holds an AB (UCDavis) in history and Latin, an MDiv in
psychiatry and religion (Union Theological) with clinical training at
the Topeka State Hospital/The Menninger Foundation, an MA (Middlebury)
in literature, and a PhD (Michigan) on Melville's critique of 19th
century masculinity. His interest in Jung began at Union Theological
Seminary, and he has returned to that interest after retiring from the
University of Michigan.
The Feldenkrais Method® teaches the brain to diversify our neuro-motor patterns (habits) so movement becomes more pleasant, skillful, and safe. This workshop will expand attendees’ movement repertoire, increase physical awareness, and provide an intellectual foundation to think about movement. Patterns that have been
firm for years can be reexamined through specific attention to movement
Movement will all be done lying down and will be open to people of all abilities. Wear clothes that are not stiff and do not restrict movement.
1) Feel their bodies more clearly.
2) Make their movement more comfortable when they want to.
Ben Law, GCFP is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais PractitionerCM in private
practice. He received a BA in Dance and Psychology from Beloit College and his Feldenkrais® certification from the Institute for the Study of Somatic Education. A professional dancer for over 10 years, he has danced with Kate Corby & Dancers, Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak, Lucky Plush Productions, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, CDI/Concert Dance, Inc., Julia Rae Antonick/Khecari, Hedwig Dances, and The Dance COLEctive. He's participated in performance art projects, including Tino Seghal‘s Kiss at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Participants will experientially play, create, and construct in liminal, transitional space various group and individual 3D projects. The goal is to bring forth new connections, awareness, and a greater clarity and meaning from our chaotic source of creativity, the unconscious.
1) Experiment with various modes of visual construction.
2) Practice and experience visual metaphor as a personal form of active imagination.
Deborah Stutsman, LPC, ATR-BC is
a Jungian Analyst trained at the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago,
holding a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis,
a Masters in Art Therapy from Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville, and she is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Her
background in art, graphic design, and art therapy uniquely qualifies her
for work with image, dreams, metaphor, and active imagination in
creative depth analysis as well as in experiential group process. She
is a past president of the C. G. Jung Society of Saint Louis, and Adjunct
Professor at the Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in
