His 1983 book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4ezo5Io\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Gift<\/a><\/em>, illuminates and defends the non-commercial portion of artistic practice. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4exJNMR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trickster Makes This World<\/a><\/em> (1998) uses a group of ancient myths to argue for the disruptive intelligence that all cultures need if they are to remain lively and open to change. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/45xhIBk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common as Air<\/a><\/em> (2010) is a spirited defense of our \u201ccultural commons,\u201d that vast store of ideas, inventions, and works of art that we have inherited from the past and continue to enrich in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hyde\u2019s most recent book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4beSn0n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Primer for Forgetting<\/a><\/em>, explores the many situations in which forgetfulness is more useful than memory\u2014in myth, personal psychology, politics, art &amp; spiritual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A MacArthur Fellow and former director of undergraduate creative writing at Harvard University, Hyde taught writing and American literature for many years at Kenyon College. Now retired, he lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with his wife, the writer Patricia Vigderman. A noted cultural analyst, she applies Jungian theory to her work as a researcher and writer. Author of three books, her work has been featured in the <em>New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post,<\/em> and <em>USA Today<\/em>. She holds an MFA in writing and literature from Bennington College and an MA in cultural studies at the University College, Dublin (honors). In 2018, she completed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jungchicago.org\/blog\/training\/jungian-psychotherapy-studies-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jungian Studies Program<\/a> at the C. G. Jung Institute Chicago where she is a professional affiliate. A scholar in residence at the Chicago Public Library, for the last decade she\u2019s been studying the digital culture and its impact on the individuation process.
