My objective is to offer (like Edward Edinger did; see his book, “Transformation of the God-Image”) a brief psychological distillation (intra-psychic perspective) of that prayer.

First, here is the prayer:

“Our Father who art in Heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.”

From a psychological point of view, the relationship between our ego and the unconscious is important for our psychological well-being, especially the relationship between our consciousness and the center of the unconscious, which Analytical Psychology (Jung) calls the Self or the God Image in us. According to Jung, God is in each of us and that He/She is the center of the unconscious, which contains not only all the undiscovered and unknown potentials, talents, and abilities in each human life but, also, the dark aspects of human nature.

“Our Father who are in Heaven”

Then, what does the first sentence – “Our Father who are in Heaven” – mean psychologically?

It may mean that, inside of each of us, there is a place (Heaven) where all the undiscovered and unknown potentials, skills, talents, abilities as well as the dark aspects are located, and that the Creator of Life -God (Father)- as well as the fundamental impulse to create is there, too.

“Hallowed be Thy name”

What does this sentence mean psychologically?

The Self -God in us- is sacred. The prayer is asking people to declare the Self sacred and to view the inner center of our lives -the Self- as holy and whole. Given that the Self or God in us is dynamic center from where all psychological life begins -wishes, desires, thoughts, unknown potentials, undiscovered talents, and untapped skills- the second sentence of prayer is asking us to view and hold our psychological lives as sacred and divine. In a world where, unfortunately, outer reality seems to be the most important aspect of a human life, redeeming the “inner life and its center” as sacred seeks to restore the great psychological value of inner life.

“Thy Kingdom Come”

The Self communicates with our ego, and that encouraging and furthering this communication is psychologically important. The Self uses dreams and other series of images to communicate important psychological information to the ego for healing and for living meaningfully: this is one of the ways the kingdom of God comes to each of us in order to heal and guide our psychological lives.

“Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven”

The ego will fulfill the directives of the Self, both intellectually and at a practical level. In other words, each of us is called to develop imaginatively and to put into practice what the Self -God in us- is hinting at us through synchronicities, dreams, active imaginations, and other images.

“Give us this day our daily bread”

Bread has been cross-culturally associated with nourishment and, therefore, this sentence may suggest that each of person can receive, from the center of the unconscious -the Self or God in us- the necessary psychological and spiritual nourishment to live life daily. While outwardly attending and living life, consulting and seeking guidance from the center of the inner life may provide the sustaining “bread” to daily feed the human heart.

“… And forgive us our trespasses…”

Sometimes, each of us fail to live the greater calling that comes from within us (from God in us or from the Self) and, therefore, we need to ask God in us (or the center of our interior life) for forgiveness for having betrayed ourselves.

“… as we forgive those who trespass against us,…”

The seventh sentence may emphasize two issues: the importance of tolerance and forgiveness towards the Center of our Interior Life (Self or God within) when it asks and insists that the ego brings to consciousness an unconscious aspect that the ego is not aware of and/or that the ego does not want to integrate. Also, an attitude of tolerance and forgiveness needs to be developed when a person brings to our attention an issue that we do not want to look at.

“… and lead us not into temptation…”

Sometimes we impulsively act or deliberately hurt people; at other times, we are kidnapped by compulsions, or foolishly say unnecessary statements. The seventh sentence suggests that the ego needs to humbly asks God in us or the center of our interior life (the Self) for not being caught in a psychological complex and to have the awareness and the presence of mind not to act in “tempting” ways that ultimately will undermine our humanity.

“… but deliver us from evil…”

This last sentence is a request from the ego to the Self not to be unconsciously identified with negative aspects of the personality in order to move towards the balance of the opposites inwardly.

In summary:

God (the Self) is the center of the human unconscious.

View and hold the Self -the center of the inner life or God in us- as sacred and divine.

Listening to the Self is psychologically important.

The ego has the responsibility of fulfilling mentally and physically the directives of the Self or God within.

Each person can receive, from the center of the unconscious -the Self or God in us- the necessary psychological and spiritual nourishment to live life daily.

We need to ask God in us (or the center of our interior life) for forgiveness when we betray ourselves.

Tolerance and forgiveness towards the Center of our Interior Life (Self or God within) is important when it insists that the ego takes a path that is needed for individuation, even if it is not what the ego wants. Tolerance towards other people’s shadows is also important.

The ego needs to humbly solicit help from the center of our interior life (the Self) in order not to be caught in a psychological complex and “tempting” ways, which ultimately undermine our humanity.

The ego wants the Self to not be unconsciously identified with negative aspects of the personality in order to move towards the balance of the opposites inwardly.

Santificado sea tu nombre.
Venga a nosotros tu reino.

A veces actuamos impulsivamente o herimos deliberadamente a personas a nuestro alrededor.

This post was first published as a series on thehealingpsyche.org.

Freddie Taborda, LCPC, PsyD is a Jungian Analyst with over 30 years of clinical experience.
