Snakes and Ladders: The Play of Consciousness in the Sand

Like a caduceus, the two paths of Jungian psychology and Siddha Yoga have circled one another in my psyche for forty years.  At moments they have connected, as the deep soul work of Jungian psychology touched India’s vision of pure awareness.  I will present my midlife sandplay process as an approach to such a union of high and deep, West and East, chthonic snakes and spiritual ladders.

PowerPoint: PowerPoint slides are edited into the video.

Audio: This download includes an audio MP3 of each lecture that can be played on smartphones, tablets, and laptops for listening on the go.

Elaine Molchanov, LCSW, ACSW

Born in Chicago, I finished my B.S. and M.S.W. by age 21, then moved to Austin, Texas to work at the University of Texas’s student mental health clinic. I began to have dreams and experiences that pointed me towards Jung (particularly the workshop “Finding God in the Unconscious” at the Jung Hotel in New Orleans!). Discovering Harry Wilmer, the only Jungian analyst in Texas, I began analysis and training. I practiced sandplay and visual art with Joan Buresh in Santa Fe, and through a dream was called to India and Siddha Yoga. The story of my life subsequently has been the interface between Jungian psychology and spiritual practice. I married Al Collins and moved to Alaska, where our two children (an artist and a religion scholar) were raised, joining the Chicago Institute in 2009. I’m especially drawn to transformation of personality through Jungian and spiritual practices, and often use art and sandplay with adults, children, and teens.
