When Standing in the Doorway Heals, and When it Doesn’t

“This presentation will allow us to focus on the fact that healing can and does occur when we are able to place ourselves in the threshold between the conscious and unconscious registers of the psyche, and to see for ourselves how some filmmakers have created works that can also heal viewers. But we will focus as well on the impact that images in the collective consciousness can have on making this healing problematic.”

The doorway serves as a spatial image for the threshold between the conscious and unconscious registers of the psyche. Some filmmakers have found ways to stand there in ways that heal; Fredericksen discusses and shows two short examples. But what happens to the healing function if the doorway leads to emptiness?
