We recorded this shortly after the 2024 US election results but, as it took some time to edit, we decided to post on inauguration day (reposted here from the original feed). In a time when self-absorbed billionaires have taken control of government, this episode’s topic feels particularly relevant.

This episode we will be reading from:

Our intro/outro music a sample of Seikilos Epitaph with the Lyre of Apollo, by Lina Palera, under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 International License. You can find the full version at FreeMusicArchive.org.

  1. The oracle says that Narcissus will live “so long as he never knows himself”…Can gazing at, and loving his reflection be considered knowing himself? Surely falling in love with his reflection is falling in love a projection, not even self-love. Narcissus loves his projection of his outer being, his body, psychologically, his persona, which is feels greatly empowered by others’ admiration and desire. So he is trapped, it seems to me, in this persona, and either unable or deeply unwilling to see beyond it…which is far from knowing himself.
