The Complications of Bliss: On the Nature of Romantic Love

Anyone who has experienced romantic love knows the divided nature of it. Emerson said of love, “All other pleasures are not worth its pains.” Lovers exultant and blissful one day find themselves consumed with jealousy and despair the next. Romantic love is a microcosm of our eternal struggle with fusion and isolation.

This presentation explores this form of love which, being so much more than conventional happiness, transcends both our search for pleasure and our ordinary avoidance of pain.

It was recorded on April 7, 2000.
